Mum who could ‘hardly breathe’ and struggled to walk on school run sheds 5 stone

A mum lost five stone after feeling embarrassed on the school run because she struggled to walk.

Victoria Beattie said she could “hardly breathe” and was “blood red in the face” whenever she went to pick her five-year-old daughter up from school.

The mum, from Plymouth, said she was at her “biggest” after the first coronavirus lockdown and decided to get fitter after reaching 19st 4lbs.

She told Plymouth Live: “I had to try and run to the school which was impossible as I found it hard to walk.

“I remember feeling very embarrassed when I got to the school, I could hardly breathe and was blood red in the face and was asked if I was OK and did I need a glass of water.

“I was so ashamed, I just wanted to get out of the school as fast as I could.”

Victoria said she struggled while on the school run due to the weight she had gained

The woman joined the Slimming World programme in September 2020, with coach Mandy Coles.

Victoria said: “When I joined I was very ashamed that I had let myself become so big.

“I knew that if I carried on the way I was eating and drinking I would end up slowly killing myself.”

In January 2021, Victoria started Couch to 5k to help her become more active, as well as joining a gym – and now she can run 7k.

So far, Victoria has lost 5st 9lbs and said she is much happier with how she looks now.

She said: “More importantly I feel much healthier and have so much more energy.

“My relationship with food is completely different. I make much healthier choices now. I also love my exercise, which has been amazing for my mental health which I have struggled with since being a teenager.”

Before joining Slimming World, Victoria would skip breakfast and eat pasties for lunch.

She would then have pasta dishes with “lots” of garlic bread, as well as snacking on crisps, chocolate and cakes.

Now, she has yoghurt and fruit for breakfast and healthy wraps for lunch.

Victoria also loves dishes such as cottage pie, hoisin beef, cabbage stir-fry and egg fried rice for dinner.

Victoria said planning meals is key for her

She said: “Planning meals has helped me stay on plan. For me lockdown has made things easier, as I haven’t been able to go out eating and drinking.”

As Victoria has a little girl, she still has treats and snacks in the house for her, but they each have their own treat boxes.

“Mine is full of lower-calorie options,” she said.

Her coach, Mandy, described Victoria as “sensational”.

She said: “I’m so proud of Vicky. Her dedication to her journey during these challenging times is such an inspiration to us all.

“It hasn’t always been easy, but she has just been so determined to achieve her dream.

“As you can see the transformation has been amazing. I can’t wait to hand her a target certificate she is sensational!”
